1970 St Mary's Undefeated State Champions

ST MARY'S SOCCER TEAM - 1970 UNDEFEATED MISSOURI STATE CHAMPS!



The upstart southsiders run the table with a 28-0-1 record by defeating Rosary HS in overtime by the score of 2-1 in front of 4,000 fans at Saint Louis University's Musial Field.

The Dragons recorded 87 goals scored against only 8 goals allowed. Many non-partisan coaches and fans have commented that the 1970 St. Mary's squad may have been the greatest high school soccer team of all time! Eight players went on to play professional soccer; Bob Matteson (St. Louis Stars), Don Ries (Miami Toros), Chris Carenza (San Antonio Thunder), Kevin Missey (New Jersey Americans), Denny Werner (New Jersey Americans), Denny Vaninger (Ft. Lauderdale Strikers), John Roeslein (New Jersey Americans) and Jim Bokern (St. Louis Stars).


Matteson, Werner, Roeslein, Jim Guttmann and Bokern also played on several NCAA Championship teams with the Saint Louis University Billikens.

Fran Slay, the current Mayor of the City of St. Louis, was a freshmen on the St. Mary's championship team.

Bob Matteson was selected the Most Valuable Player, Chris Carenza as Best Defensive Player and Jim Bokern as Best Offensive Player.
